Meet The royals Family...
The royals family was created by former Supporters’ Club Chairman Roger Titford and drawn by When Saturday Comes artist Dave Robinson. The original five characters Warrren, Alberrrt, Errric, RRRonaldo and Harrriet represented the different types of fan for Reading Football Supporters’ Club all too briefly in the years just before we changed our set-up and identity and became STAR in 2002.
We thought it would be nice to bring them back to the 21st century with Kerrry, our new additional family member (joined 2011), waving the date of STAR’S foundation. The Warrren character featured on one of our most loved enamel badges and there’s a chance Kerrry might do one day too.
In true Shoot! magazine style, here are their stories.
Home: Salisbury Road, since the war. The Great War, that is.
Occupation: Head slaughterman (retired).
Wife’s name: Was Ethel (I always called her Eggo).
Favourite Food: Brown Windsor soup – Berkshire’s gift to world cuisine
Favourite Pubs: Packed all that it when they shut The Peacock and The Target. Never anywhere else like those places.
What keeps you awake at night? The cleaning lady! And Nobbing.
Favourite all-time player and why: Alf Messer, hard as nails
What do you most like about supporting Reading? Proper centre-forwards with a bit of bite – Pat Terry, Percy Freeman, Robin Friday, Jimmy Quinn, Billy Whitehurst – that Shane Long is doing nicely.
Home: Spent, or rather dwelt, 58% of my life in Newbury, 42% in Maidenhead and amazingly 0% in Reading!
Occupation: Meter reader.
Wife’s name: Not applicable.
Favourite Food: Cheese (English).
Favourite Pubs: Reading Public Library.
What keeps you awake at night? Comparing goal averages with goal differences. Makes surprisingly little difference to the league tables, you know, but keeps my maths sharp.
Favourite all-time player and why: Arthur Wilkie – most goals in a game by a keeper, an enduring record since 1962.
What do you most like about supporting Reading? Compared with the average league club there’s a statistically significant likelihood of Reading coming up with a weird statistical oddity. Who’d want to support MK Dons!!!
Home: Henley, actually.
Occupation: Two actually - wedding organiser and ordained church minister
Wife’s name: Pardon? My boyfriend is called Hugo but he doesn’t come here on ‘football’ days.
Favourite Food: Lobster from the Kennet – a rare delicacy.
Favourite Pubs: The French Horn at Sonning and The Royals Rendezvous are the only two I’ve ever been in. Each had its charms.
What keeps you awake at night? Archie’s penalty miss.
Favourite all-time player and why: Trevor Senior – grace under pressure.
What do you most like about supporting Reading? Oh, the passion of it all, the shouting, the screaming and the (mild only) swearing. Without the Royals I’d have to be an evangelical, dear.
Home: Tilehurst somewhere. I duck and dive a bit, to be honest.
Occupation: Footman at Windsor Castle.
Wife’s name: She’s not my wife!
Favourite Food: Anything red. And hot. And big.
Favourite Pubs: Have you seen the price of 8 pints of lager lately ?!?! Used to be the Happy Prospect (before) and The Victory (after).
What keeps you awake at night? Curry. Birdsong.
Favourite all-time player and why: Parky, hard as nails
What do you most like about supporting Reading? Local pride and live football. When I shout at the players they hear me alright, not like those muppets ‘supporting’ Man U and that from their armchairs.
Home: Rabsons Rec, hanging round the Megastore, Shit Island off the A33
Occupation: KS3 stundent, FSM and G&T
Wife’s name: Most girls I know are called Kimberley so it’ll probably be that.
Favourite Food: Sherbet Fountain - and Fangtastics at the weekend.
Favourite Pubs: The, hey, mister that’s a trick question! There’s none left in Whitley, is there?
What keeps you awake at night? Little bro’s Rumblestix.
Favourite all-time player and why: Hal Robson-Kanu – a complete forward line in one name.
What do you most like about supporting Reading? Cheap tickets and easy autographs. Not to mention tenacity, spirit and flair. And being able to walk home past all the traffic after matches.
Home: Katesgrove, natch.
Occupation: Sun-bed occupant, at present.
Wife’s name: I am THE wife!
Favourite Food: Ooh, I’ll have a lovely west coast kyocera from Waitrose, please. How creepy is that!
Favourite Pubs: My chap says The Red Cow would be a good fit (git!) but I prefer rummaging for bridal wear in the Megastore.
What keeps you awake at night? Memorising Law 11 – you can’t be too careful as a lady at football these days.
Favourite all-time player and why: I love them all – especially the hairy ones.
What do you most like about supporting Reading? Listening to thousands of people singing ‘cmon, you royals’. It doesn’t happen anywhere else, you know!
