STAR and SBWD response to the EFL Points Deduction

STAR are disappointed but not surprised to hear that we have another points deduction for the third season running – the only football club in history to have a points deduction for 3 consecutive seasons.  Not a record we want to hold.  With a further suspended points deduction it is time for the Football club to get their house in order.  We have been working alongside Sell Before we Dai and they have released this statement on the points deduction and EFL hearing.

“Sell Before We Dai”, a pressure group set up to demand a change of ownership at Reading FC, has responded to the latest points deduction by the EFL.

Spokesperson Nick Houlton said: “We thank the EFL for acknowledging the negative impact the club’s ownership is having on our staff, fans, and community. This is further proof of the disastrous stewardship under Reading FC’s owner Dai Yongge.

“However, we are very concerned at the EFL’s stance to pursue sanctions that disproportionately impact our staff, fans, and community.

“Points deductions punish fans, not owners. We implore the EFL to start treating supporters as victims, not offenders. We implore the EFL to pursue reform in line with the recommendations set out in the recent government White Paper. They must be able to stop owners who are clearly neither fit nor proper taking charge of football clubs.

“We are also very concerned to read that the EFL is conducting a further review of the latest round of sanctions imposed on the club.

“We were informed that we’d had the last of our medicine by the club earlier this year. This statement shows beyond any doubt that our punishment may not be over yet. We urge caution against making an example of Reading FC through any disproportionate punishment.

“We once again call on Dai Yongge to sell to a fit and proper owner who can provide the club with the security and stability it needs.”
